PG in HSR Layout, Bangalore: what to check before you choose

By Vansh K.,

If you are looking for a PG in HSR Layout, start with your commute, not the room. HSR is a large residential area in south-east Bangalore, and two PGs that look close on a map can mean very different daily journeys depending on which side of the area they sit and how you travel. Decide how you get to college or work first, then shortlist PGs around that.

This guide covers what is generally true about house hunting in a busy area like HSR and what to verify yourself. Nothing here replaces a visit, because every building and every street is different.

Work out the commute before anything else

HSR Layout is split into numbered sectors, and the area borders some of the busiest roads in the city. Traffic at peak hours can turn a short distance into a long trip. Before you fall for a PG, do the journey once at the hour you will actually travel. Take the bus, the cab or your own vehicle, whatever you plan to use, and see how long it really takes.

If you work from home or hybrid, the commute matters less and the room, the Wi-Fi and the noise matter more. Be honest about which kind of week you will have, because it changes what you should prioritise.

Check the street, not just the building

A PG can have a good room and a bad street. Visit in the evening as well as during the day. Look at how busy the lane is, whether there are restaurants or bars nearby that stay open late, and whether the road is lit and feels fine to walk when you come back after dark. Ask whoever lives there how the street feels at night.

Also look at practical things you will use every week: a grocery shop, a pharmacy, a laundry and an ATM within walking distance make a bigger difference than most people expect.

Ask the same questions at every PG

When you visit several places, it is easy to forget what each one said. Ask the same list everywhere and write the answers down. Useful ones are what the monthly rent includes, whether electricity and water are charged separately, how much the deposit is and when it is returned, what the notice period is, and what the rules are for guests and for coming back late.

Ask to see the actual room you would get, not a sample room. Check the bathroom, the water supply, the window, the mattress and the plug points. Ask how many people share the bathroom and the kitchen or dining area, and how the food is arranged if meals are included. Taste it if you can.

Think about sharing and privacy

Sharing type changes both the price and your daily life. A single room gives you quiet and privacy, while double or triple sharing is usually cheaper but means adjusting to roommates. If you study or take calls at home, a quieter setup may be worth more to you than saving on rent. Ask whether you can meet your roommate before you decide.

Get everything in writing

Once you pick a place, do not rely on what was said at the door. Ask for the rent, the deposit, the notice period and the refund terms in writing, and keep the payment receipts. If something is unclear, ask again before you pay. A clear owner will not mind.

HSR has a lot of choice, which is good for you. Take your time, compare a few places on the same checklist, and choose the one that fits your commute, your budget and the way you live.
